Dr Gray is the third son of a surgeon. "I guess I was surrounded by medicine
at a very young age," he said. An engineer at heart, he was drawn to orthopaedics while
still in junior high school. Dr. Gray is the Chief of Hand Surgery, and serves as Vice
Chief of Surgery at University Community Hospital, Carrollwood campus. He has been in
private practice since 1994. Dr. Gray volunteers for several local charities including a
program where he helps paint and renovate homes in impoverished neighborhoods. "I believe
in giving back to the community where my practice is located," he said.
Born in Kansas City, Mo., Dr. Gray received a BA degree from Vanderbilt University, in
Molecular Biology, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Graduating with a doctor of medicine
degree from the Vanderbilt School of Medicine, he pursued an internship in general surgery
at the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
As an orthopaedic resident at the University of California at San Francisco, Dr. Gray was
appointed a member of the Bone Bank Team. He authored papers on humeral non-unions,
hemipelvectomies, intermedullary femoral nailings, and the treatment of displaced femoral
neck fractures.
Following his Chief Residency year, he was a fellow in hand, microvascular and upper
extremity surgery at the Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa. He worked as
team hand surgeon for the Philadelphia Flyers and actively participated in research on
flexor tendon materials and reconstructive implants. Today, he remains enthusiastic about
his practice where he treats general orthopaedic problems, sports medicine injuries and
performs total joint replacement surgery.
A sports enthusiast, Dr, Gray plays softball, backpacks and is an avid water and snow skier.
He is committed to continuing his medical education and attends sports medicine, hand
surgery and general orthopaedic seminars routinely. He is a fellow of the American Academy
